In case of inclement weather, listen to your radio or watch the early morning news for information on school closing or delayed openings. We will follow Fairfax County Public Schools schedule. If we deviate from the above policy, you will be notified by 8:30 a.m.
| FCPS | MVPC Preschool |
| Closed | Closed |
| 1 hour delay | 10:00 start time, dismissal at 12:00 |
2 hour delay | 10:00 start time, dismissal at 12:00* |
Note: We do not make up snow days or other days lost due to emergencies.
*New policy adopted 2006. Director still has discretion to close if unsafe conditions exist.
In the event that a medication needs to be administered to a child at Preschool, the prescription medicine must be sent in the current prescription bottle and accompanied by a written order from the physician. These orders may be transmitted from the doctor’s office to the Preschool Director via fax. The physician’s order for medication must be reviewed and updated at the beginning of each school year. All changes in dosage require a new written order.
Medications will be maintained in locked storage; refrigeration is available if needed. Preschool personnel will maintain logs to record administration of medications.
Please notify preschool personnel as soon as you become aware of any allergies you child has. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us, and it is much easier to keep all our preschoolers safe if we are aware of any medical concerns.
If a child has an accident or emergency while at school, parents will either be notified immediately or when they come to pick-up the child, depending on the severity of the accident. For these types of situations, it is imperative that we have current home, work, mobile, and emergency numbers. If the situation warrants immediate medical attention, 911 will be called and appropriate action taken. For less severe accidents, an accident report will be completed and the classroom teacher will notify parents when the child is picked up from school at noon.
Child abuse and neglect can have a disastrous and long lasting effect on a child’s development and scholastic performance. Teachers and Preschool employees are required by law to report any suspected cases/incidents of abuse or neglect by family members or others. We are required by law to file a report with Child Protective Services. Teachers will receive training on how to look for and report suspected child abuse.
Reporting incidents is to ensure that children can feel safe in their homes, communities, and schools. Mandated reporting provides early home intervention in situations that require professional assistance. Mandated reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect is for the protection of our children.
MVPC Preschool has taken steps to create plans, to keep the children safe in case of an emergency. Our utmost concern is that of your child’s safety and of yours as well, so that family units can reunite safely, intact, and as soon as possible.
As a Preschool we will practice emergency drills with the children so that they know exactly what to expect in these situations.
In case of a:
- Fire
Children will assemble in rows outside on the sidewalk in front of the church, the main sanctuary. Children will remain there until we are told it is safe to return to the building.
- Tornado
Children will move to the Gathering Room, an interior room with no windows or exterior doors, and sit on the floor with their hands over their heads in a crouched position. Children will remain there until we are notified that it is safe to leave the building.
- Dangerous Individual OR a Threat to the Preschool Property
- The severity of the threat will determine how we enforce lock down procedures.
- Lock Down: In the event that FCPS operates in a lock down mode at anytime that the Preschool is in progress, the Preschool will follow suit. All doors will be locked, and no one may enter or exit during the time of operation. The Preschool will allow entrance and exit only for persons who have established business in the Preschool, “expected” visitors, and parents. All persons must go to the Preschool office and ring the bell. Please be aware that you may be asked to show your ID through the window before entering. The morning drop off and afternoon pick up will continue as usual with the possibility of extra security in place. Playground and outside activities will be suspended during lock down time.
- Code Red Lock Down: Teachers will gather all the children within the room, immediately lock the doors, move the children away from the windows, and turn off the lights. Instruction will cease and everyone will remain silent.
- When the threat is gone, classroom teachers will be notified and instruction can continue.
- Hazardous Chemicals/Biological/Radiological Exposure
Children and staff will move into Room 108. Doors will be locked and sealed with duct tape. Heating and air conditioning systems will likely be shut down, and water turned off. All switches to air vents will be taped off, and all open vents sealed shut. In such cases, where it may be necessary to have children remain at school for a prolonged period, we will make sure we have supplies to sustain children and staff located in the closet within Room 108. We ask that parents bring an extra set of clothes to the school to be left in case of emergency.* Children will remain here until it is safe.
- As mentioned before, we know it is difficult to be separated from your child in times of emergency; however, it is the safest thing for all involved to remain where they are until the emergency is over.
* Parents should review the clothing sent to Preschool periodically to verify size and the appropriateness for the weather.
