Discipline shall be constructive in nature. These methods include:
- Fair and consistent limits
- Positively worded directions
- Providing reasons for limits
- Redirection and modeling acceptable behaviors
- Assistance with verbal expressions of feelings and frustrations
- Arranging activities and schedules in a way that promotes desirable behavior
Discipline is viewed not as a means of punishing a child who has acted inappropriately, but as a means of teaching a child. Positive discipline teaches children where the limits are set, how to maintain control over their bodies, how to problem solve in the event of conflict. Discipline is most effective when it follows logical consequences. The consequences for the behavior has to make sense to the child. Our staff will modify the activity and redirect the child when necessary. The purpose of discipline is to empathize with one another’s feelings and realize the negative results of their actions.
At times it will be necessary to limit a child’s choices of activities due to inappropriate behavior. Separation of children may become necessary in the case of two or more children having extreme difficulty playing together without continual conflict.
Inappropriate behavior shall be viewed exactly as that. Children shall never be referred to as naughty or bad.
All staff are expected to give unconditional acceptance of the child as a good person trying to do their best to learn about life.
We will make every effort to work with the parents of children having behavioral difficulties in school. Children displaying chronic disruptive behavior, which has been determined to be upsetting to the physical and emotional well being of the classroom may require the following actions:
- Initial Consultation – The Director may require the parent(s) of any child who attends MVPCPS to meet for a conference. The parent(s) will be involved in creating approaches towards solving the problem behavior.
- Second Consultation – If the initial plan for helping the child is unsuccessful, the parent(s) will again be required to meet with the Director. Another attempt will be made to identify the problem, outline new approaches to the problem and discuss the consequences if progress is not apparent.
- Suspension – When the previous consultations have been followed and no progress has been made towards solving the problem, the child may be suspended from school.
- The Director may immediately suspend, either temporarily or permanently, a child at any time that he/she exhibits a behavior which is harmful to him/her or others. A parent will be called any time the child exhibits uncontrollable behavior that cannot be modified by the staff. The parent will then be asked to take the child home immediately.
