TWEEN TIME

“Who or what is a tween?” you ask. A tween is a relatively new word to describe children in grades 4-6. Sometimes tweens get lost in our churches because they don’t feel comfortable with younger children and yet they are not quite ready for the youth program. They hesitate to sing in the choir or play the chimes because they prefer to be with others their own ages, not younger children; and developmentally they are not ready to be with middle and high school youth. As tweens, they are caught between “the not anymore” stage and “the not yet there” stage.

As tweens transition from childhood to adolescence and are adjusting to their new selves, these are excellent years to connect them with adult mentors and provide a range of opportunities for fellowship and service. As you might well recall, transitions are often feared and can be uncomfortable times in our lives, but when embraced with intentionality and compassion, the transition from child to adolescent can be more than tolerable or survivable – most definitely something worth celebrating.

Be sure to check the church calendar, but tweens will usually meet the 2nd Sunday of each month from 4:30 – 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall for fun, fellowship, and service.

Parents are encouraged to help with this special ministry.
